Every year my sons school has a celebration known as family day. This year they decided to go with a 60's theme. I immediately loved the idea of dressing up. But I wanted to do a little research before deciding on what to wear.
The 60's are known for diversity. People dressed according to their beliefs and what social group they were part off. Which is not that different from today.
I found that these were the four most popular groups.
The Mod culture or the stylish kids on the block. (Picture Mad Men characters) The Mod culture is known for choosing designer dresses or suits.
The hippies rebelled against the idea of spending too much money on clothes, so they kept things simple and if possible hand made.
The skinheads were the working class group. Their style varied but the one thing most skinheads had as part of their wardrobe were boots, army surplus or working boots.
The Rockers or rebels, known for their denim pants and leather jackets. They used their style to express rebellion against the Mod culture which were considered their rivals.
Today we can still label style one way or another. However for many, labels no longer apply. Just look at some fashion bloggers today. You will see one post of them being vintage and channeling the 60's and on another post they will wear a maxi dress and accessorize to create a Boho look. We are less worried about belonging to a certain group and our styles are more about expressing how we feel.
Which in my opinion is what fashion has been and will continue to be, a fun way to express ourselves.
If I had to create a label for my style, I would go with convenient. I dress with what I think would be the most comfortable, according to where I'm going. What would your label say?
Fun fact: The mini skirt became popular in the 60's.
Until my next post.
